The toll at exit 145 of the Garden State Parkway will be collected in only one direction starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 26th.
Exit 145 connects the Parkway to I-280 in East Orange. Drivers now pay 50 cents both entering the southbound Parkway and exiting from the northbound Parkway at that location. When the switch to one-way tolling takes effect Monday night, drivers will pay no toll when they exit from the northbound Parkway and a $1 toll when they enter the southbound Parkway.
The conversion to one-way tolling will facilitate a series of capital improvements being made at the exit and on nearby roads and bridges. Work on the $63.2 million project is underway and is scheduled to continue until 2022. The work includes safety and capacity improvements at the interchange, the replacement of the Central Avenue overpass, the reconstruction of Oraton Avenue between Central and Park avenues, and the rehabilitation of the decks, safety parapets, and median barriers on five bridges that either carry the Parkway over local roads or carry local roads over the Parkway.
